Google Maps Listing

Most people know Google as a search engine, but aren’t as familiar with its many other services. Google Maps is one aspect of their Local Business Center that often comes in handy. Google maps is the online mapping service that helps locate company information, images and much more. This is useful to people who use the internet to search for information. The local business community’s data is presented organized, which makes it really applicable for individuals who are seeking nearly anything from the cheapest car wash to the nearest insurance agent. This type of search service provides street maps, urban business locators that aid in finding any type of business in numerous countries of the world and a route planner that is very helpful for those traveling by public transport, foot or car.

Here is a site I have been working on recently: Buying a Furnace. This website is kind of like a “playground”. I am experimenting with new ideas. Some work, some don’t, but I gotta try somewhere, right? I originally bought the domain and then decided to throw a “domain parking” script on it. You can see it here: Buying a Furnace. For some reason, Google didn’t appreciate that (nor did the other search engines) at all and won’t index the site. Originally it did, but then it took down al the pages. So, as you can see, I am just doing a little testing to fine tune my SEO skills. Here is a furnace buying blog I started. Not much, but it’s a start.

I think a lot of web designers and internet marketers gloss over and often neglect the description meta tag. I would like to stress the value of the description meta tag in this post.

The big “G” uses the description meta tag as a suggestion for what it will use in their search results. Think of the description meta tag as two full lines of ad copy. You have two full lines (about 155 charachters or so total) to accomplish two objectives:

  1. Write a compelling sentence to entice surfers to click on your link.
  2. Give your keywords for that particular page to Google so it can store it for searches.

There are many important aspects of creating a website that will be loved by the search engines and by your visitors, but none as important as having words on pages. Sounds simple I know, but ask any web designer what their biggest frustration is and they will typically tell you, ‘Getting the client to write!’.

Keyword Rich Content is a Must

You can have the fanciest site with the best graphics and spend wads of cash on the latest website promotion strategies, but if you don’t have high quality, keyword rich content the search engine spiders will never find you. If by some stroke of luck they do find you, they won’t rank you very high. The industry phrase seems to be; “Content is King”.
